John was invited to an event on Halloween eve. He was excited about it. He would get to dress up in his pirate costume, complete with an eye patch, a peg leg and a sword. He was looking forward to “letting his hair down” and getting rowdy at the party as a pirate. “You can pretty much do anything that you want at a costume party,” he thought.
When John arrived at the party with his peg leg and patch over his left eye, he entered swinging his sword and saying loudly, “Ai Mate!” He was shocked and embarrassed to find out that it wasn’t supposed to be a wild costume affair. In fact it wasn’t really a party. Everyone was dressed in their after work attire, and the event was quite sedate. It was an intervention. A friend, Steve, had a drinking problem and all of his friends had gathered to confront him with this.
John immediately left the party, went home and changed into his somber attire. He returned to the party with a very different attitude, and acted very differently.
The point of the story is that we wear many costumes as we go through our days and weeks and months and years. It seems that we never settle on one, but allow the circumstances and the environment to dictate who we will be. The personality that shows up at a funeral is a very different one than the one attending the seventh game of the World Series.
From the viewpoint of reality you have no specific identity – you represent infinity. Have you ever given that any thought? The infant is just being his or her infinite self. Everything goes. But once you become part of society there are many personas – many face-masks you wear, many personalities you express. We all have multiple personalities!
May I ask you a question? Which persona do you most enjoy expressing – rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief? Triumphant victor? Helpless victim? Doctor, lawyer, Indian chief (what would those equivalents be for you?)
When it comes to choosing your personality, do you choose what is right or choose what is expected of you? Do you choose what is original or choose what is demanded? When consciously knowing what personality you’re showing, it is amazing how much more pleasurable your life can be.
Just a curiosity … Happy Halloween.
