Will Power alone will never break a bad habit. There are steps to take to break a bad habit:
First – you’ve got to believe you can break the habit. If you do not believe you can break the habit, then don’t try. You’ll only cry.
Next – Pain attention to the pain you get from the bad habit. Magnify the pain, and how foolish you are to allow the habit to persist. No pain no gain, except this time you are striving to break the habit to rid yourself of the pain.
Okay now – investigate the basic problem that drove you to the habit; the problem that made you your own worst enemy. Did you feel unworthy? Did you feel guilty? Were you just a lame brain about it? What went askew psychologically that drove you into the arms of the villainous habit?
and then – meditate on the pleasure you will get from dropping the habit. Use the carrot; your prior step had you beating yourself with a stick. What’s the gain you get when you quit the habit? What do you get that will be truly satisfying? Write the gains on paper and read them over again and again.
Finally – direct your action toward a replacement pattern of behavior. Remember, life abhors a vacuum. If you don’t replace the habit with something new, the habit will come flying back to you.
You can break any habit and live a better life when you get into the habit of believing you deserve a better life.
