Every moment presents you with a choice:
- will you experience the present, where life is actually going on around you?
- will you be in the past, emotionally reacting to life from past experiences?
- will you be in the future, allowing your imagination to take you a thousand miles away from where you are right now?
Life is not trying to force you into any specific choice. You aren’t asked to stop thinking – you’re not asked to shut down your memories of past experiences, nor are you asked to deactivate your fantasies about the future. You’re not even asked to relax the mind and enjoy the fullness and abundance of the present.
Most of us, it seems, do not make it a priority to be present to the present. We’ve made it a habit to be distracted by past memories or future imaginings, and live most of our lives in the mind.
Student: “Excuse me sir, the first swat of your hand, I noticed was to swat away a fly; the second swat was at nothing. What was the second gesture about?”
Teacher: “Indeed the first swat was at a fly, but I wasn’t fully conscious of swatting at the fly until I’d completed the gesture. The second swat was conscious and on purpose. I just wanted to make the correction.”
