While speaking with a neighbor the other day, she began telling me how exhausted she’d been feeling for several months now. She said, “I feel like I spend all of my time attending social affairs and community obligations that others think are important for me to attend. I spend little or no time on the things that I think are important for my own inner happiness and outer development.”
She went on to explain that about a week ago she sensed that someone was trying to contact her with something important to say. She couldn’t imagine what it could be, but the haunting feeling continued. And, then one evening at about 9:00 pm while sitting alone and feeling exhausted, planning for her next day, she received a message. However, it wasn’t a phone call from someone out there in the world, as she anticipated; it was a call from deep within. A still voice said to her, “It’s your life, Karen. Would you like to have it back? When do you intend to live your life as you want it to be?”
She explained that this became a moment of incredible revelation for her. The next day she immediately resigned from several committees that she’d only joined because others insisted that she join them. She also cut back on the daily lunches and afternoon teas imposed on her by what she considered, ‘a community of artificiality’ in which she found herself living.
She concluded by saying, “I never dared to be so bold before. I’ve never felt freer. I’ve never felt happier.
By doing what she did, Karen obeyed a natural law: To Thine Own Self Be True. I believe there are two qualities that we must call upon in order to be true to our own selves:
(1) Have the courage to liberate yourself psychologically from the emotional chains that society can impose on you.
(2) Act with boldness – resign from the life others try to force on you. Resigning is easy; simply be yourself and get involved in life in ways that feel right for you.
You always have the one thing you need to be true to yourself, so that you may have the courage to act boldly in your best interest. You are always totally free to choose your responses to life.
