
When folks ask me what I mean by “attending the mind,” I tell them about a dog of mine who loved to stalk pigeons. He really wasn’t interested in catching one; he simply got a thrill out the chaos he caused as the pigeons took to flight.
When you “attend to your mind” you become aware of the thoughts that you stalk. Do you simply get a thrill out of listening for opinions that you can pounce upon, thus causing chaos? Or, are you stalking thoughts that you can reinforce and support because they bring harmony and love to the moment?

This is the key to drama addiction. Stalking trouble. I had a friend …who had a problem with her husband or…with her kids…or the lady at work had a disease or her great aunt millie, who she had never met had died…It was an enlightenment for me to see that she always had to have trouble in her life. It was just how far she had to reach to claim it as her own. That was a big lesson.

Hi Rob, I can definitely relate to this — I’ve noticed in myself a tendency to look for something to fret about. If I can’t find a reason in my surroundings, I’ll just imagine something that could happen. A meditation teacher once told me that “the mind’s function is to find problems,” and keeping this in mind, so to speak, has been very helpful to me.
